Abstract
Since Padrin (prifinium bromide) has been found to possess the most potent anticholinergic activity by Kumada et al, many clinical reports of the effect on labor with Padrin were presented. In this report, the authors carried out clinical studies of this compound on its effect on labor in comparison with control group, and on after-pain.
Two groups of 30 primigravidae 32 multigravidae being between 38 weeks to 42 weeks were selected in order to evaluate the effect of Padrin on the first stage of labor (2-4 cm. dilated). And in order to observe the spasmolytic effect of Padrin on after-pain, 29 normal primiparas and 29 multiparas were selected immediately after delivery.
The results obtained were as follows:
1. The mean duration of the first stage of labor in Padrin injected primigravidae was 8 hours 27 minutes and that in control primigravidae was 10 hours 56 minutes.
2. The mean duration of the first stage of labor in Padrin injected multigravidae was 5 hours 22 minutes and that in control multigravidae was 9 hours 23 minutes.
3. Padrin shortens markedly the first stage of labor, therefore, total duration of labor in Padrin injected groups were much shorter than that in control groups.
4. A satisfactory rate of effectiveness, 72.4 percent in primiparas and 79.3 percent in multiparas, were achieved in puerperas with after-pain.
5. In Padrin injected groups, no effects on the third stage bleeding and Apgar score were observed.
6. Mild thirsty (2 patients) was observed, but- it was spontaneously disappeared without specific management.
